Hillsborough ceremony honors 100th anniversary of end of WWI

Residents from all backgrounds gathered with one goal on Sunday, commemorating the end of World War I.

“To be able to ring out bell in our town, in a small town that represents America, is just wonderful to be a part of,” Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens said.

All morning, Stevens watched the clock closely, hoping to ring the old courthouse bell at a significant time.

“The war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 100 years ago,” he said. “There is a rope to ring the bell. So, I’ll be pulling that rope at exactly 11 o’clock in memory and commemoration of the 100th anniversary.”

As he made his way to the bell, people gathered outside, honoring veterans in various ways.

“The end of World War I is an incredible time to sort of honor these men from 100 years ago and all of the veterans,” veteran Ernest Dollar said. “We decided to ransack through my closet and pull out these uniforms from World War I.”

Whether they were in uniform or representing their support with American flags, residents were excited to share in the special moment.

After the bell rang, a moment of silence followed to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
