High school students killed in Orange County crash

Two high school students died Thursday night in a crash in Orange County.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two high school students died Thursday night in a crash in Orange County.

According to the State Highway Patrol, troopers around 9:30 p.m. responded to a crash on Oak Grove Church Road near Chipmunk Lane.

Officials said a Subaru was traveling south on Oak Grove Church Road when it went off the road to the right, re-entered the roadway, crossed the center line, traveled off the road to the left and struck a tree, catching fire. 

Two people inside the car, identified as students at Southeast Alamance High School, died.

The Alamance-Burlington School System released the following statement:

"We send our love and support to their families, friends, and our staff as they process this heartbreaking news. Extra support staff are on hand in our schools to assist students and staff today and this week as needed."

The crash is under investigation, including what caused the driver to lose control.

Oak Grove Church Road was closed for approximately three hours during the investigation.

Troopers cleared the scene at 12:12 a.m.
