CARY, N.C. — A memorial of toys, flowers and candles is growing outside the home of a 6-year-old girl whose life was tragically cut short when she was hit by a car in front of her Cary home, just a few days after Christmas.

Family members said Josselyn Perez Hernandez was playing outside near the sidewalk in front of her house when a car suddenly hit her.

Now, that tragic spot on Walnut Street, just across the street from R.S. Dunham Park, is the space where the community is choosing to honor and remember Josselyn's life.

A post of the memorial in a local Cary group on social media is drawing comments from residents who drive past that stretch of Walnut Street regularly. Some say they're upset when they see some vehicles still speeding faster than the posted 35mph.

Several commenters said they would love to see speed bumps installed near the park. Others said they were concerned, feeling some drivers are still speeding on Walnut Street even after the tragedy.

Just as the memorial is growing, a GoFundMe for the Hernandez family is gaining community support, with people pulling together to raise nearly $17,000 for the family.
