announcement

The Readers' Room: Read any good books lately? Or perhaps, read any books so horrible that you just must tell us about them? Come to the Readers Room to talk about the interesting, not so interesting and awfully dull books that you have read lately.

about the readers room

A place to discuss what you have been reading. Do you recommend it? Should there be a skull and crossbones on the cover to warn the unwary?

Books discussed need not be great literature, though they may be. We can discuss detective fiction - of which I read a lot - science fiction, of which I used to read a lot, historical novels, whatever.

Get a cup of tea, pull up an armchair, light a fire in the fireplace, and curl up.

I'm reading "The Fireman's Wife" now, by Jack Riggs. It's written in the first person, not all that odd, but the chapters are named after the wife and the firefighter. In the chapters named after the wife, she is doing the talking. In the ones named after the firefighter, he is doing the talking. Different

Ok, I'm finished with "Woman of a Thousand Secrets" by Barbara Wood. It's about an Island girl, and the Mayans she meets on the mainland on a journey to find out what her true identity is. She was taken in by an elderly island couple and raised by them, until she turned 21 and her "grandmother" started to see signs in nature that indicated that it was time for the young woman to return to the sea, and to the mainland. It's a good story. I don't know anything about the Mayan, Incan or Aztec cultures, so I don't know how real the cultural references are, but it is still a good story. The lead male is a little slooooow for my liking. LOL

Right now I'm reading "Woman of a Thousand Secrets", but I can't remember the author. It's set in the Central American Islands in the 1300's. I'm a little over half-way finished, and enjoying it. Also I have "The Fireman's Wife", about a SC FD Chief's wife who bails, and "Resolution", a crime novel set in Texas in the Old West. More Texas, but, I'm loving it.

"Stormy Weather" by Paulette Jiles was set in Depression Era Texas, during the droughts and dust storms of the 1930's. The main character (Jenine) is a tomboy, like a lot of women's novels, but that's where the similarity ends. The family goes through a lot together, and they stick together. Jenine ends up with two suitors, and I found myself *really* rooting for one of them. It was such a great book, filled with little historical references that make the whole story seem so familiar. And it was good to put perspective on our economy now. If you don't have much, you don't have much to lose, and much to gain. I loved it, I'd read it again.

"Lonestar Sanctuary" by Colleen Coble is a good book. It's a modern western/murder mystery/christian romance novel (which sounds like an oxymoron, but it's not!). I can say that this was one book I wasn't able to predict the end of, the whodunit. It could've been at least 1/3 longer if she would've spent more time describing scenes, but still, she gets her point across well. It was one of those that you hate to see the end of, or at least, wish there would be a sequel. The intimate parts were nicely done, no erotica, and I'm glad because I always flip through those anyway (I have a great imagination, and know where the smut shop is, if I want some). There is a section at the end for book discussion groups, and I've never seen that before. Suggested questions to discuss. I guess that's a good thing.

I'm still reading "Glittering Images" by Susan Howatch, dealing with the Anglican church back in the 1920s - there are six books in the series, so I expect they'll keep me busy for a while. Good characters, historically accurate, well written. Having a house full of kids has put a crimp into my reading time.

lol, Silver, sometimes we can get set in a rutt. I'll check her out.

By the way, I've checked out "Stormy Weather" by Paulette Jiles and "Lonestar Sanctuary" by Colleen Coble to read next. Both look pretty good. Oddly, both set in Texas. Seems like I'm either in the mythical world or in Texas, lately. Or is that the same thing? ;)

I finally had time to finish reading "Warrior Rising". The author is P.C. Cast. NCMom, you would really like this book I think because it's really pretty similar to "The Dark Highlander", except it deals with the Greek Gods, Goddesses and Heroes instead of Celtic ones. Cast is a good storyteller, has a good sense of humor and a great vocabulary. There is much more Greek/Roman lore available to draw from the the Celtic, since the Celts passed down their lore orally instead of writing it down (thereby preventing the Romans from stealing it, unlike the Greeks). Cast says at the end under Historucal References that she basically used historical characters and made up the storyline to go with them, and she does a really good job too. I enjoyed the book, but I'd like to read other of her books before I say outright that she's great. It isn't hard to cut and paste the same storyline with minor changes and call it another book, and if she doesn't do that, then, she's my hero.

I would like to put in a recommendation for Duma Key; it's the best Stephen King book I've read in awhile. I also read a book a friend recommended American Gods by Neil Gaimen (sp). It was good as well. Sort of a horror / sci-fi type deal. The movie Stardust was a book by him. Good characters.
