It’s extremely difficult to work and go to school, especially graduate school, at the same time. It definitely impacts both your work life and your family life. I am convinced that it was the root cause of my divorce a few years back.
The kids that have parents that can “foot the bill” just don’t know how lucky they are to be able to stay in school until they finish.
I tell folks that it’s just a shame that I was born handsome rather than wealthy. (Aside: That’s a private joke that you can only appreciate if you saw me ....)
Dr. Trussell is a good person; he’s been around long enough to know just how difficult it is to work and go to school at the same time. I’m sure he will do all he can to help you.
And, if there’s anything that I can do, let me know,

In my case a PhD won’t do me much good. “Dr.” may look good on my tombstone, but practically speaking it won’t help make money. I’ve been a PE for over 25 years and that’s where the real money is ....
My goal is to teach at university level (and continue to be a consultant on the side) to try to pass on some of my experiences to the next generation. (I've got toothmarks, you see ...)
In your case, DON’T GIVE UP. If it’s a matter of quality points, just take more courses until you make them up. If it’s the course itself, take it again.
Above all, GO OVER AND TALK TO SOMEONE.
NCSU EE is desperate for American graduate students, even older forts like us. If you’re like me and just let this go you’ll feel a sense of failure for years to come. I think the bottom line is that is what really sent me back ...
Let me know if I can help, Len (aka STS)

I wouldn’t give up quite so quickly.
I graduated in ’69 with a 2.011 GPA. They let me into graduate school in ’81 after I took a couple of ‘background’ courses.
During my MS program I had a serious bicycle accident and ended up with a C in one of my courses. It was one of those cases where the instructor said that they would work with me. This particular person was an adjunct professor filled out the grade sheet and left campus forever. That’s been almost 30 years ago and I am still pizzed ...
I finished up a MS in ’86. I continued on into a PhD program but dropped out in ’89. I was taking only one course a semester and it was impossible to get through the qualifying exams that way.
I came back into the program 3 years ago – the qualifying exam rules had changed.
Continued ....

I just noticed that you are in the MS program in EE at NCSU.
I’m there too, also EE, in the PhD program in power.
I had thought that I was the world’s oldest graduate student, but it looks like you may be running a close second ....
What’s your area, when do you plan to finish, etc ....
BTW, I’m probably one of the few folks around here that actually recognizes your avatar screen ....
