about dsickles

I have worked as a writer, graphic artist and photographer in publishing, pharmaceutical and hi-tech advertising, performing arts, new and traditional media, and am now working in the non-profit world again.

In my "spare time" (and to keep my skills sharp), I'm some combination of freelance writer, photographer and graphic artist for Our State Magazine, WRAL.com, a handful of local newspapers, and private industry.

My favorite pasttimes are spending time with my family, hiking, golfing, gardening, art history, knitting and reading. I also have high hopes of becoming a successful novelist and seeing the world before I'm too old to enjoy it.

One other thing....

Many of the prolific commenters on GOLO hate me, but then, many of the prolific commenters are also ignorant bigots. My favorite is the guy who speaks warmly about his childhood experiences with the KKK. If you believe what he has to say, the Klan is just a Southern version of Knights of Columbus.

Yep, a lot of people hate me on here. Thanks for not hating me.

Thank you for your kind words!

You and I have a lot in common, professionally and otherwise. (I love Psych, Monk, and Jimmy Neutron.) I have even appeared in your magazine a few times, but I will not tell you where or when.

What I find interesting is that you seem to enjoy movies and music filled with chaos, yet your favorite cities -- Emerald Isle, Wilmington, Charleston -- are anything but chaotic. Is that how you balance things out? That's how I do it. I like to switch back and forth between WCPE and my Black Sabbath CD. I have enjoyed the Carmen Ballet and Black Label Society with equal fervor. (Note: Zacke Wilde was spitting beer at the audience when he played at Ziggy's in Winston Salem. Whew! I was glad we stayed out of the mosh pit. That's just nasty.)

Hey, I bet you'd also enjoy "Cities_of_the_Underworld" on the History Channel. It's truly fascinating. http://www.history.com/cities-of-the-underworld

Ciao Dolly, Hope you're doing fine and your ankle is better now. Are you all ready fro Halloween? Who are you voting for, I'm curious.

Regarding your Nissan, it sounds like you got some good referrals and I hope one works out for you. I will tell you this much that I know...Atlantic Avenue (Brent, Svc Manager) is not necessarily the least expensive, but I can tell you without an ounce of reservation that he will not lie or exagerate the problem. He knows cars and Nissans are his specialty. That's where we take ours for anything major. I trust him completely to be upfront with us. I don't refer people lightly b/c I feel that when making a reference, I'm putting MY reputation out there as well. I really trust him. If any of the others don't work out for you, check Atlantic Avenue out. Brent's a great guy!

Your interview with Angela was wonderful. Would love to sit and chat with you, and there are VERY few people that impress me enough these days to even think that!

May your grass always be green, no matter which side of the fence you are on.

Hey Dolly- I know, you did have the fun office...ummmm, I had an interesting one :-) I saw my friend Brooke that worked there even less time then I did and she reminded me of some of the total fruitcakes that were there when we both were. You missed a couple of real winners. Oh well, guess it is good for some laughs :-)

My business IS booming! I am thrilled to be working with some great clients and am branching into new areas. I am working with HGTV on a large project (that is about the only channel I watch IF I watch tv) and am also running some international campaigns for some healthcare clients and actually charting new ground. We are tracking and monitoring closely as I will be presenting at several of their industry trade-shows, etc. Life is GREAT! In my free time I am working on restoring the cottage, getting ready to do the prison ministry with Smorgas and am gearing up for the coming school year. I intend to volunteer in daughter's classroom once a week.

I hope life is GREAT?

I agree, thankfully none of my friends from Texas were effected by the storms any. All they saw was showers and some wind. Nothing really bad. Hope all has been good for you!

You sure are causing a lot of problems in my native state of Texas LOL. You need to stop all that ruckus you are causing down there. LOL.

How is everything going? Hope all has been well!!!

Hi Dolly! Great interview. I was surprised that Angela used my catchy phrase that I've had on my profile for months. Glad you liked it!

Hope you have a great week.

hello dolly! :) great interview. such a wise woman! :)
