state oks 10% rate increase for progress energy
Published Nov. 18, 2008RALEIGH, N.C. — Progress Energy will be allowed to recover some of its higher fuel costs by raising prices on the average household bill by more than 10 percent.
The electricity price will increase in December. Rates would likely increase again in December 2009. The state Utilities Commission approved the 10.2 percent increase Friday.
The Raleigh-based electric company agreed in September to spread the increase over three years after negotiating with the commission's Public Staff, which represents consumers and industrial customers.
In June, Progress Energy asked to raise rates by 16.2 percent to about $113 a month for an average household using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. The Utilities Commission instead approved a rate that will increase bills from almost $97 to nearly $107.
Does anyone feel that this is riduculous??? I can understand some increase for their fuel costs, but gas has gone down $2 a gallon and they are going to get a 20% increase in two years!!!!!! This is flat wrong....the consumer cannot stand this.
And, it's not just Progress Energy. The grocery stores went sky high on their prices because of gasoline, but have any of you seen their prices come down even 1 penny when gas started dropping? No, and you won't see it come down. We should all do to the grocery stores what we did to the gas stations....cut our spending. I know I could eat a little less....would do me good. I have already started flatly refusing to pay $1.59 w/tax for a 20 ounce soda!! That is highway robbery. I buy the discounted drinks or 1 liters!! The consumer CAN make a difference but we have to show them our strength in numbers.
Does this irk anyone besides me????

I wish someone would start a TWC hater blog... they want as much for entertainment as Progress Energy does for power. How can anyone afford it?
I'll be looking for ways to deny PE 10% of my normal usage. I'll start by using those super cheap Virgin Mary candles I see at the grocery store, I guess. You can pick 'em up for about a buck and they burn for days. Too bad I can't read the Spanish writing...
