the cost of healthcare.....

Published Oct. 14, 2008

In focusing on one of the many important issues in this presidential campaign, let's take a look at the moment at  McCain's Health Plan.  Will it actually lower prices for the consumer?

A key element of John McCain's health plan, would allow people to buy insurance from other states — that's currently prohibited. The GOP presidential hopeful says it would open markets and bring prices down. But critics say it has the potential to drive up prices dramatically for sick people and deprive patients of important consumer protections.

Has anyone done substantive research on this?  Will this plan deprive patients of important consumer protections as the criticis suggest.

Neither candidate is going to have the money to take over health care in the US. The US already spends 10x the money of any other country on health care.

You raise excellent points!

Oh no, you got me going! It's kinda like abortions, why do we abort so many babies. Because it is easier, less hard, than providing a caring supportive environment for the mother and child. Oh yea, and it also provides A LOT of money, federal, for doctors and nurses. FOLLAR THE DOLLAR.

By the way, neither of these clowns are gona fix what is wrong with our health care system. It's just gona be more tampering with a system that could work very well if they'd get politicians out of the doctors office and operating rooms.

Tawny - I think we should begin fixing our health care system by allowing more student in school to become doctors. Today, the number of seats in medical school and the number of beds in hospitals are strickly controlled to keep prices high. By whom? Your government and the American Medical Association. Kinda like the government keeping milk prices artifically high so farmers can make money. We have a great system but the high cost is created and maintained at the most fundamental levels.

Scans are digitally transmitted overseas (India) and doctors there "read" and the pictures. You can GOOGLE this. I pretty common. We have a shortage of these radiologist.

Had to do a little research. You are referring to an outsourcer, such as "Nighthawke Radiological" services. I was unaware of that, but a quick call to a neighbor provided some information that many of the large urban hospitals tend to use this outsourcing method.

Can you explain further what you mean that "scans are read overseas"?

Tawny - A lot of scans are now read overseas and it takes a while to do that. A part of keeping the cost down.

It has always amazed me that in this country when a patient obtains a CT scan in an ER, for example, the patient has a wait period prior to receiving the results from the doctor, but will not be able to receive those results in hand upon discharge from the ER.....but in countries such as France or Italy (and I'm not touting socialized medicine) using the same scenario, you can receive your medical reports, after ER tx., immediately upon discharge. What drives this?
