RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Chief Operating Officer Dan DeVane and N.C. Board of Transportation member Gus Tulloss joined local elected officials to break ground on the first phase of the U.S. 70 Goldsboro Bypass during a ceremony this morning in Goldsboro. The $65.5 million, 3.9-mile section of four-lane freeway will run from west of I-795 to east of Wayne Memorial Drive.
“The Goldsboro Bypass will help improve travel along U.S. 70 and is part of the department’s efforts to upgrade the entire corridor between Raleigh and Morehead City,” DeVane said. “It will reduce travel time and offer greater mobility for motorists.”
The project includes interchanges at I-795, old U.S. 117 and Wayne Memorial Drive.
The contract was awarded to Barnhill Construction Co., and completion is scheduled for the end of 2011.
NCDOT is working to acquire right of way for the three remaining sections of the bypass, which will eventually stretch from west of N.C. 581 in Wayne County to Promise Land Road (State Road 1323) in Lenoir County.
