ri schools required to teach about dating violence

Published Oct. 6, 2008

Ann Burke saw signs of trouble with her daughter's boyfriend.

He'd incessantly call her at night, keep her from her family, and, ultimately, physically abuse her during a tumultuous relationship that ended with her death three years ago.

Burke's 23-year-old daughter, Lindsay, may not have understood the dynamics of an abusive relationship, but her death is helping to ensure that other young people do.

A new law in Rhode Island called the Lindsay Ann Burke Act requires all public middle and high schools to teach students about dating violence in their health classes.

What do ya'll think of this?  I think it's the parents responsibility to educate your children regarding, for lack of a better word, life.  This just seems to me to be more government involvement and parents dropping the ball, yet again.  Your thoughts?

I believe it is a parent's job to education their children about "life". Unfortuantely in many instances, it does not happen or is "side-stepped" because parents are not always comfortable in providing needed information to their child.

I agree with Willow. As parents we try to instill all the "know hows" into our children, but abuse is usually one we don't tackle until it happens. Sometimes, kids will also not be comfortable going to parents with certain issues, especially if they deem them shameful, and it doesn't hurt to have a neutral ground where they can learn without the fear that mom or dad are saying things just because they don't like the boyfriend (or girlfriend.)

While it is all well and good to say that this isn't the school's job, that we should teach the 3Rs and leave the social issues to parents, what does that alternative bring? We know that parents aren't teaching their kids this stuff, do we just ignore that fact and let them get abused? Are we really at the point where we will forsake the well being of children so casually?

some parents arent going to do their job. I say government stay out of it , then we shouldnt let the kids have sadd, students against drunk driving right ? but once again some dont have the ienpt to teach their kids basic living skills

I think children should be made aware of what happens when they date...WAY before they start dating.

YES, I think it is the parent's responsibilty, but I would also want them educated by SOMEONE responsible if the parents didn't do it

Seen too many pregnant middle school girls. (6-8 grade)

"This should be part of an overall course to prepare both boys and girls for the real world. Include sex ed (not just abstinence), care for a baby, balancing a check book, menu planning, budgeting, changing a tire, jumping a dead battery, first aid, and basic cooking. There's probably more to add but that's all I could think of now." White Eagle

Amen! I'd probably add laundry & keeping a car's oil changed to your list, but they are all life skills everyone needs.

oh yeah, and there was no real point to that story other than I just like retelling it. :)

When you have children having children and these parents not being old enough or wise enough to look after themselves, you can't expect them to teach their children about much of anything can you? I have to say that though it takes time away from teaching basic education, it may save lives and thus is valuable. It could be taught during teen living classes or even during Freshman Seminar.

I'm sorry to hear that, Mocha. Nobody should have to endure that. I wonder where the women(s) family is at those times? A friend went through pure hello with her daughters abuser (she even shot him once and when she went to trial, he was so obnoxious that the Judge threw out the case, told her to retrieve her gun and go home (actually, he said afterward that he wanted to shoot him himself)). Eventually, after more abuse, he was arrested (again) and this time sent to prison for 42 years minimum.

I'll agree this is the parents' responsibility - but one they don't seem to be taking in some cases. It may be because many of them have never considered the possibility before.

Having the school teaching something about the dynamics sure beats nobody teaching about the dynamics. Those families who do work this piece of education into their lives can have the school's information to discuss as well as their own. Those families who don't, now have something to think about.
