ri schools required to teach about dating violence
Published Oct. 6, 2008Ann Burke saw signs of trouble with her daughter's boyfriend.
He'd incessantly call her at night, keep her from her family, and, ultimately, physically abuse her during a tumultuous relationship that ended with her death three years ago.
Burke's 23-year-old daughter, Lindsay, may not have understood the dynamics of an abusive relationship, but her death is helping to ensure that other young people do.
A new law in Rhode Island called the Lindsay Ann Burke Act requires all public middle and high schools to teach students about dating violence in their health classes.
What do ya'll think of this? I think it's the parents responsibility to educate your children regarding, for lack of a better word, life. This just seems to me to be more government involvement and parents dropping the ball, yet again. Your thoughts?

YES, I think it is the parent's responsibilty, but I would also want them educated by SOMEONE responsible if the parents didn't do it

Amen! I'd probably add laundry & keeping a car's oil changed to your list, but they are all life skills everyone needs.

Having the school teaching something about the dynamics sure beats nobody teaching about the dynamics. Those families who do work this piece of education into their lives can have the school's information to discuss as well as their own. Those families who don't, now have something to think about.
