Motorcyclist killed in Interstate 540 wreck

Posted: Aug. 22, 2008
Updated: Today at 9:57 a.m.

Knightdale, N.C. — A motorcyclist died in a wreck involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 540 East late Friday night, Knightdale police said.

Three motorcycles were traveling between Buffaloe Road exit and U.S. Highway 64 Business on I-540 East when two of the motorcycles made contact shortly before 10:30 p.m., Lt. David Simmons said.

Willie Jenkins Hodges, 46, of Fuquay-Varina, lost control of his bike and wrecked. He was ejected and landed in the middle of the road, where an 18-wheeler truck ran over him, Simmons said.

Hodges declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

Hodges, a brick-mason foreman who loved to ride motorcycles, was out for a ride with his brother and another rider, family members said. Hodges’ family returned to the scene of the wreck on Saturday.

“He was like a brother to me, more so than a brother-in-law,” said Angela Graham, Hodges’ sister-in-law.

Services for Hodges will be held Tuesday at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, and the funeral will follow.

In lieu of flowers, family members requested that donations be sent to the New Providence Education Fund. Checks can be mailed to at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church, 4813 Hilltop Needmore Road in Fuquay-Varina.

No one else was injured in the wreck, and Simmons said no charges have been filed.

Detectives said multiple witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle trio traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash. Police were investigating those claims.

Driver James Zack told WRAL News that he had to swerve to avoid several speeding motorcycles moments before the wreck.

“They were going as fast as motorcycles will go,” Zack said.

Zack said witnessing the wreck has been extremely tough on him.

“I’m not going to be sleeping for a while, I don’t think,” Zack said.

I-540 East was closed for several hours and traffic diverted at Buffaloe Road as state troopers and Knightdale police officers worked the scene. Westbound lanes remained open.

Personally, I never ride side by side like that in a single lane. I'll ride staggered when in a group. Gives you more wiggle room in case of debris on the orad, potholes, bad situations...etcetera...But to each his own.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone touched by this tragedy. I was behind three pairs of Harley riders this afternoon on a busy highway, and wanted to show each of them this news article. Each pair was riding alongside each other in the same lane. It would not have taken much of a bobble to make contact and create the same scenario. In my area, this is a common practice riding alongside each other in a single lane that is too narrow to handle the two bikes. Don't the riders realize this makes contact much more likely? And it endangers others on the road. Please understand, I am not saying this is what happened in the 540 accident. I could just see an eerily similar situation occurring.

My prayers goes out to all the family of the one that is decessed, truck driver and all others.May God send a comfort and give them peace.God bless all.

I respect others right to ride. I had my lesson early. Almost lost a foot at age 14. Had some close calls on my Dad'd Goldwing. I choose not to ride on the road. I still enjoy riding in the dirt.

I have never had a tree back out in front of me.

I saw this today. Very sad for all involved! My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the drivers who were witnesses and especially the truck driver. That is something that will probably haunt him for a long time.

I went riding with friends today and this was on my mind. A motorcycle is definitely not the place to become complacent or take your mind off the task. My prayers to his family and the truck driver.

What a tragic story for all of those involved. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and with the truck driver and all of the witnesses. As a fellow motorcyclist these kind of reminders hit very close to home and are a reminder to keep from getting throttle happy!

Thoughts and Prayers with this man's Family and Friends!!!

The 18 wheeler as well...I am sure he tried to avoid it.

Dudes used to ask me:

How fast can that Harley go ?

I would tell them:

"As Fast As You Want To Die"

Don't know the story so I can't really say...

Stopped riding my Superglide when my daughter was born...

Sold it a year later.

As a biker since 1958, I’m always saddened to hear of an accident and especially of the death of a biker.

Unfortunately, some types of behavior are a form of Natural Selection. On a motorcycle, the briefest instant of incompetence can be fatal.

Requiescat in Pace
