female "male chauvinist"?
Published Aug. 21, 2008I write this blog with some hesitancy b/c it's about someone very close to me. Not that I expect the person to ever read it, and not that I haven't shared my feelings with this person, but I wouldn't want to hurt feelings if someone else shared it. Yet, I can't help but come here and ask the question; Do any of you know a female 'male chauvinist?'
I'm a very indpendent woman who appreciates my man! While I do believe there are biological and inherent differences between men and women, I consider us partners and equally capable of most things. The person of whom I speak sees men as "THE ANSWER" to all. There is a specific line and on one side are "men's expertise." It doesn't matter if a woman can answer the question, it's not reliable. But if a man says the exact same thing, it's written in stone. I'll often get a call that starts with, "I need to speak to your husband. I have a man question." The question may be something simple like, how do I check my oil? or even better, I got a letter in the mail from a credit card company wanting me to consolidate...
Most of the time, I can just shrug it off as a generational thing. That doesn't mean I don't express my feelings and chastize, but mostly I let it go. Other times, I just sit there, staring in disbelief.
Example: I was told once that I shouldn't discuss something w/hubby that was making an economic impact on our family b/c it might "hurt that male pride." HEH? Male pride be danged. WE are a team and I have not only the right, but the obligation to address something that affects us and our family.
Other comments revolve around general situations, but still indicate a subserviant female basically bowing down to the far superior male. One such comment was made about how good for the man to be doing THAT job b/c a woman wouldn't be able to figure it out. EEEEKKK!!!!
There are too many individual comments to share, but basically, it boils down to the mentality that women should accept things, not question a man, let men handle certain things even though women are quite capable..... I just don't understand that!
How about you guys? Know anyone like this? How do you handle those eek comments?

If your father has died, she may be trying to get some reassurance from your husband (not uncommon and absolutely not sexual). If not, she may just be ... odd (for lack of a better word, since I don't know her).
In any case, you ain't gonna change her.

On the one hand, he doesn't sound as though he's pushing her to be subservient, but on the other, he isn't really doing much to empower her not to be either.
Difficult scenario ...
