frustrating

Published Aug. 5, 2008

Was supposed to have my MRI reading yesterday.  Appointment was for 2:20.  I got there five minutes early [it's a miracle I did, trust me].  Got waved in, nurse took my blood pressure which was slightly higher than normal...probably because they have CNN on in the lobby [KIDDING lol].  Nurse says 'he'll be in in a few minutes.'

Thirty minutes later, the nurse comes back in to replenish their stock of examination gowns.  I asked her what time it was and she goes 'Why?  Do you have somewhere else to be?'  She sounded a little put out.  Told her I was on my lunch break.  It was 2:50, she said.  She said she'd tell Dr. Singh I was on my lunch break and that it would only be a few minutes more.

Now this whole time between me sitting down and him coming in, I can hear him out there talking to another patient and she's older and wants to know everything...so I cut him a little slack in that department, but her whole ordeal with him only lasted about five minutes before I heard him tell her goodbye and heard her walker creaking on down towards the lobby.

Finally...FINALLY he shows up and goes 'well, do you have your films?'

My HUH?!  I said no, the tech at wakemed walked me out to the parking lot and told me to go home...was I supposed to GET films!?  And he said 'Well yeah, so I can show you what I'm seeing.'

Well great, fantastic, fabulous, wonderful...nobody told me this.

He seemed a little annoyed that I was annoyed at him taking so long to see me.  Basically he was like 'well what I'm seeing is that you have a disc herniation between c-5 and c-6.'

And then I really got annoyed because this whole FREAKING TIME he's been telling me it's between c-4 and c-5.  He even showed it to me on the xray...and I counted.

WHAT THE BLANKETY BLANK!?!

He said he could do an injection if I wanted him to, that it would feel better...but I don't really feel confident enough in this guy anymore to invest the time OR the money in that crap.  I AM in pain, but it's manageable.

He said if he saw me again in two months, it would probably be all better...but there was also a risk of it coming back so I would be in the same kind of pain I was in before I got treatment.

Three minutes of annoyed doctor consult...without even getting to see my MRI...thirty five minutes of sitting around waiting for him to come in and tell me that I have the option of an injection to get rid of the pain but really there is nothing else he can do...and I had to pay thirty freaking bucks.

Plus I was twenty minutes late back to work.

The pain is worse this morning.  I still don't have full range of motion in my neck.

I just don't know what to do anymore.

"Usually you have to PAY if you want your own copy of a film."

I've never paid, they give a CD and I take it to the next doctor.

cotton.... what about the pts who had their apts before you.

all i asked for was to be referred to an orthopedic, this takes, what? 5 seconds to do ???????????? i KNEW my knee was gone but she seemed determined for me to go in for what ? I am INJURED, i do not have the flu, a simple phone call to my ortho doc, which she did before in the past, would have sufficed, and she wanted me to go in to tell me something i already knew? Cha right ! i was injured and could not wait 2 WEEKS to be told something i already knew. :)

The clinics/hospitals I had worked with NEVER gave me my films. I was put in a tailspin when the clinician called me and told me the MRI showed there was a large growth in the left hemisphere; but the left optic nerve looked good. I called my Neurologist and left a message for an urgent callback, and called family letting them know what I was told by the technician, and that I was waiting to hear from the Dr.

Turns out they misread the scan (THANKFULLY) and made me worry over nothing. I let the doc know what they told me and he understood why I had called in panic.

Usually you have to PAY if you want your own copy of a film.

Also, those films and test results are yours and you can take them with you to your new doctor.

Your first mistake was going to Wake Med.

That aside, you can change doctors, as one poster suggested and Wake or Cary Ortho are pretty good.

I will give you the same advice I gave my friend when she felt uncomfortable. IF YOU DON'T FEEL CONFIDENT IN HIS DIAGNOSIS, GET A SECOND OPINION!! The new doctor may say the same thing but be able to bring you comfort in it and ease your mind. It is your body, you do have a say in it. I know you hate the Dr. appointments and co-pays but it will be worth it for piece of mind.

There's worse to come, I'm afraid. Before you opt for those spinal pain shots, do some heavy duty homework. Sometimes they do help - but believe me, THEY are not painless. As long as you're maybe considering changing doctors, it might be wise to consider other treatment options. I MUCH preferred the surgery, and the next sucker that comes at my spine with a needle is going to get it kicked up his backside.

go to Raleigh Orthopaedics and see Doctor Robert Wyker

cotton.... what about the pts who had their apts before you. If the doctor was booked up for two weeks, was the doctor supposed to tell one of those pts that they needed to wait to be seen, and move their apt out another 2 weeks because a VIP wanted his apt before them?... We do actually have 3 doctors who will not EVER let us double book their clinic slots because it is imposible for them to see 2 pts at 8am, 3 pts at 8:15am, 2 pts at 8:30am, ect ect. The pts of those doctors do get VERY mad when we tell them that the next avalible apointment that we can give them is weeks or months away. The doctors tell us to tell them that if they are in that much pain, and about to die, then to go to the ER. (this makes perfect sence to me!)

I understand your frustration, but, from the other side... I work in a HUGE clinic. The doctors "slots" for patients vary from 15 to 45 min. Depending on the pts diagnosis, and what they are having done. Now, doctors do often get behind. This is due to many differant things. One is, pts holding the doctors in the rooms, for longer times than expected. But the main reason is... The doctors clinic gets filled up completely, with no extra time slots left. Then we get dozens of phone calls from people in pain, or having complications or issues. They can not wait weeks or months for an open time slot to be seen. So we have no choice but to double book them into the doctors schedule. We have to double book 3 to 10 slots per day. Now we all know that the doctor can not physicaly be in two rooms with 2 pts at once. Usualy the pts who we did a favor for, by squeezing them in, are the main ones being impaitient asking every 5 min when they'll be seen.
