i'm under attack!!!!
Published Jul. 8, 2008I've got crawling things, slimy things, and slithering things under control. I am being attacked by flying things, though.
The night before last the Japanese beetles and lady bugs started up. Now, I like Japanese beetles; they are fun to play with. And lady bugs are flat out cute, except these are the new species that bite. Not very nice of them.
Last night the mosquitos started up in full force. This morning, we had an accidental overspray of the surrounding properties which should take care of that problem.
But...
I walk outside a few minutes ago, and some B2 of an insect takes a direct run at me and attaches itself to my face. Clamps down on my left cheek just to the side of my nose.
The cicadas are back!!!
They are big. They are heavy. They are fast. They are stupid. They are ugly. And they are not so much fearless of humans as they are completely ignorant of anything else except mating. They are fun to mess with, however. They most definitely do not like being turned over on their backs.
I'm still waiting for the first praying mantis and luna moth of the year, though. They are running behind.

You should be proud. You have just been selected as a mating partner for a cicada.
And, about the lady bugs that bite: They’re probably lesbians; I understand that the hetro ones just nibble ....

That is sad. I used to love to play with ladybugs when I was litle.

I first ran into them about 14 years ago when one of my programmers was sitting around playing with one on his arm. They he yelped claiming that the lady bug bit him. We all thought he was insane. Then I looked it up on line and found out that he was not insane, at least not for that reason. They have since become fairly well entrenched and they will chomp you. Big time.

Each of their six legs has a needle-like spike. And each of those six leg spikes were now embedded in my shoulder. Deeply.
It was not a fun ride home.
