She was looking for keys; mail carrier notices letters piling up

The Associated Pressupdated 9:36 p.m. ET, Sat., July. 5, 2008

GREENDALE, Wis. - A 91-year-old woman who had crawled under her car to look for her keys ended up stuck beneath an axle for two days until her mail carrier noticed letters piling up, police said.

Betty Borowski, of the Milwaukee suburb of Greendale, was found Tuesday and remained in a hospital in critical intensive care Friday, her niece Nancy DiMarco said. The hospital would not give an update on her condition Saturday.

Borowski, who lives alone, became stuck June 29 while looking for her keys; her head apparently got pinned by the axle, Greendale Police Chief Rob Dams said.

"She was pretty well wedged in there," Dams said. "It looks like she crawled under headfirst."

Borowski's mail carrier noticed Tuesday that the previous day's mail was still in her mailbox, police said. He rang the doorbell and then asked a neighbor whether he had seen Borowski lately. He hadn't, so they called police.

Firefighters lifted the car with a jack and removed Borowski, who was dehydrated and confused.

It turned out her keys were in the car door.

Borowski appears to be recovering, DiMarco said, but may have suffered a minor heart attack while under the vehicle.

"If it wasn't for people seeing a situation and following through ... who knows?" she said. "She wouldn't have made it about one more day."

**Whenever I read articles like this it saddens my heart. Thank goodness the mailman cared enough to check in on her. What if he hadn't? What about the family? When are you too old to live alone? I am not saying she is or she was but this could have been worse. Has anyone on GOLO ever had to make the decision to put a relative in a nursing home or take them in? Which would you prefer if you had to make that choice? My gma had a stroke sometime ago and she hasn't been the same sense. I just thank God that we are from a country town and my mother lives across the ditch behind her and she checks in on her daily. And I have an aunt who lives across the yard from her as well. My gma wont let us do for her  like we want to and we have to be sure that we dont insult her by making her believe we dont think she can live on her own anymore. What are your thoughts? I am praying for a speedy recovery for this woman and her family. **

I'm not sure if nursing homes are an American phenomenon or not but we have definitely "perfected" them. We are one of the few societies that discards the elderly like an empty soda bottle. I think that is both a symptom and a contributing factor to our society losing touch with where we came from. Most people don't want to take time with with "old folks". Personally I always learn something. They may not move as fast as we do but guaranteed they've gone a lot farther than we have gone yet.

I saw this article over the weekend and I too was sadden by it. I worked in the hospital and seen many many older people come in there and no one checked on them. No family, no friends, no nothing. I would go in there daily and sang to them, do their hair, paint the lil' old ladies nails and toe nails, or just converse with them. Most of them were from a local rest home and the nurses from the rest home would tell us that for years no one has come to check up on them. It's very sad.

i think the mailman deserves some major recognition for caring enough to go the extra mile!

It is a difficult decision to make, but unfortunately in today's world, it's almost impossible to care for an elderly person that needs constant care because in most families everybody has to work everyday. Back in the 'better' days for caring for your parents, both people didn't have to work for a living. Unless you're wealthy and can hire a home nurse or something, it's the only alternative.

Sounds to me as if she was already confused before crawling under the car. I seriously hope this lady's family reevaluates her living situation.

Personally, I don't believe in nursing homes, unless absolutely necessary. I believe that people should be allowed to live AND die with their dignity intact. My wife's Gma lived the last 2 years of her life alone in a split-level house, the same one she raised her 3 children in their entire lives. She had a HECK of a time negotiating the 1/2 flight of stairs that separated the bedrooms & bathrooms form the rest of the living areas. Logically she should not have been left alone in the house. One good fall could have badly injured or killed her BUT it's where she wanted to be. Mentally she was sharp enough to be alone but physically she was VERY weak.

I was so proud of the family (and the neighbors) for allowing her to stay there until she died and for pitching in and helping her do it.

I think that if she wanted to risk breaking her neck alone so she could live in her own home of 60 years then she should have the right to choose that.

My mother is a mail carrier, she will be retiring soon, but she has come to the rescue of a handful of elderly people during her career. Most of the elderly folks were shut ins and the only contact they had a daily basis was with the "mail lady." When the mail would stack up or if my mom hadn't spoken to the homeowner in 2 days she would knock on the door. One women on her route gave her, her daughters phone number in case of an emergency. How sad is that, you have to give your daughters number to the mail lady because she is the one who sees you everyday. Kudos to the letter carrier for taking the time to investigate. Its people like that, that give civil servants a good name.

@dwntwnboy

That is sooo true. You definitely reap what you sow. I am a firm believer in this.

My grandmother- in her late 80s, fell going from the car to her front door. She was on the ground for a couple of hours- in the rain- before a passing car happened to see her out there. My grandfather was home, but was unable to hear her as the TV was turned up to a ridiculous volume. This stranger came along and helped her in her time of need. They didn't ask for anything in return and went about their day. That is the core of being a decent human being. Seeing someone that needs nothing more than a helping hand, and helping them even though it may take a couple of moments out of your busy life. I don't know who that person was that helped my grandmother, but you better believe I won't pass someone by that may need help if there is any way I can help. Karma is a wonderful, powerful force and I'm happy to do my part to pass it on.

It is great that the mailman cared enough to look into it. If he didnt, I cant imagine how long she would have been under there. I wonder how come no one heard her yelling for help..or kicking or something?
