BAGHDAD — Iraq's prime minister said yesterday that the government has defeated terrorism in the country, a sign of growing confidence after recent crackdowns against Sunni extremists and Shiite militias.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki began the crackdowns to extend the authority of the government over areas in Baghdad and elsewhere that have largely been under the control of armed groups since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
"They were intending to besiege Baghdad and control it," al-Maliki said. "But thanks to the will of the tribes, security forces, army and all Iraqis, we defeated them."

(Tmed - add "satire" to the list of things liberals don't understand.)

Maybe you ARE finally getting it, TMed. What the 'catch' (news speak for 'first sentence/paragraph) says is NOT what the article says.
Fox News is notorious for such stuff. Just watch the morning news gang and you'll understand.
Once more, your knee-jerk reaction to my cynicism towards the media and online postings that exagerate or misrepresent a quote or report is to cry out in your "You (omitted, but always implied: Ignorant) Liberals".
(sigh) Maybe one day you'll be able to see the difference between a cynical (or sometimes satirical) post and a true 'hard news' item.
So, I guess I'll just have to keep trying. Maybe you'll get it and realize it's something to laugh at instead of going into cardio-vascular vapor lock.

In the sense that there isn't lines dividing the sides, no enemy air force, navy, or encampments, could mean the WAR is over.
In the sense that the murder rate in Detroit, if put upon Iraq, would mean 32 per day in Iraq, and there isn't a war in Detroit or New Orleans, then what level of war it there.
I call it a war, although as war goes, it was never really much, I guess, even as the line of vehicles rolled across to Baghdad of one, even as bombs and artillery, and tanks and land mines exploded. An average of 3 soldiers a day have died in whatever it has been, but then, 50K died in Nam, and ever what that was.
