"Let nothing be said of the dead but what is good."

When Jesse Helms passed away, I was totally surprised by the venom and ugliness that came out here on GOLO from certain persons toward the late Senator. I've always been brought up to say nothing if it can't be something good, of the recently departed persons. Most people I've associated with over the years, most people I work with seem to have the same philosophy. It's not turning a blind eye to their faults or misadventures, however perceived, it's just a part of being civil in an increasingly uncivil society.

These days there is less and less tact in personal interactions. Oh sure , we at least pretend  to love and adore those who think like us, who talk like us, who we identify with...But for those who dare to have a variance in how to proceed in life, for those who march to a different drum, we offer nothing but scorn and condemnation...even  before their body is completely cooled off after their passing on.

The display of some saying in the blogs on GOLO , "May he rot in hell", and worse completely surprised me coming so soon after the announcement of Helm's death. I would have expected much more of what we used to call , "couth" when it came to this type of thing. Obviously there are those for whom their hatred knows no restraint, for whom there is no need to care about the  feelings of grieving families or those who admired the recently departed.

For these who have so much hatred in their hearts, I feel truly sorry. Hopefully your family wont be subjected to reading similar diatribes after your passing on. It just seems more civil to at least wait till the flowers have weathered and the grass started regrowing on the grave before we start throwing mud about someone that's just died.  Seems more Southern anyways. Talking ugly about the recently departed must be another behavior the carpetbaggers brought South with them.

wow i had no idea Jess passed away, one thing i will always take from him "Walk like a duck, talk like a duck and hang around with ducks, it dang sure isn't a chicken." It's just a shame i know for his family and friends. RIP Jess

Trying to teach my boys manners. Makes my heart swell when they open the door for someone and say please and thank you without my prompting them.

Reb--As people of the south we did have and were raised with those manners. I guess it's called having the melting pot we call our cultures. Things blend in and folks change. I hope I never lose the respect I was taught and have tried to hold on to..........

Matthew 12: 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. This pretty much sums up what we're seeing on this on many of the blogs having to do with Jesse Helms, or for that matter other (usually conservative) figureheads. You will eventually speak what is in your heart. From I've seen from several on here, I'd just as soon never meet them in person as it must be miserable for them just to breathe. More the pity for them.

E9, I agree. I don't like them either.

Looks like there are plenty of ignorant people to take his place.

One less stupid old white man in the world. Yippee.

"I am sure we wouldn't have so much tender sentiment if it were Al or the other Jesse who just died."

Fine with me. I don't like them either.

you're right tmed..... he did whistle it...... i just chose to leave the error uncorrected..... .lol

I could be wrong, but I don't believe he "sang" Dixie - I believe he whistled it (as in "you ain't just whistlin Dixie")
