the big deal isn't so much with eating meat, it's with eating meat that comes from an abused and tortured animal. i think i'll make a blog about this... a lot of folks don't know what kind of torture their chicken tenders went through to get into the value meal.
I was just thinking of mammals..... once they start lactating, so long as there's demand, it keeps going. Just an extension of the dairy cow thing..... just thinking out loud.
I try to frequent the local farmers market, and there is always home grown meat for sell. pork, lamb, goat, buffalo, and cow, I guess chicken too. lots of fresh chicken and duck eggs. very affordable and the meat is clean. I prefer fish and seafood, but ever so often I do enjoy a small bit of buffalo or lamb. kinda funny since I was a vegetarian for years (about 90% now). This is in orange county by the way. The veggies rule!! lots of organic greens, whether you buy it already picked or the plants to grow at home. I think most people are trying to go back to the victory gardens of the 40's. Better than slaving over grass any day!!!!
I have been around reising hogs for nearly all my life. It ain't the way it used to be. they are raised on concrete and bread for lean meat. You can't any real "fat back" anymore. It is all too thin.
BTW - the old "black mammy" - back in the day there was a woman of child bearing age around to nurse babies so the rest of the women folk could keep working - or in the case of the plantation owner's wife, so she didn't have to be bothered with it. Practical, but it rubs me the wrong way.
mrkagain
Yes. Once a cow drops a calf she will begin to produce milk, and will produce so long as she's milked everyday. A cow that has been producing milk for a long while has to be milked everyday or it causes them extreme pain. Beyond that, I don't know... I was not a dairy farmer, we just had a cow most of the time when I was a kid.
We raised pork, chickens and eggs. No beef.
