Why Do People Use Apple Cider Vinegar

I do have diabetes, I'm trying the apple cider vinegar.

  • Diabetes

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of apple cider vinegar’s possible health benefits is its effect on blood glucose levels. Several small studies suggest that vinegar (both apple cider vinegar and other types) may help to lower glucose levels.

For example, a preliminary study by researchers at Arizona State University, published in the journal Diabetes Care, examined people with type 2 diabetes. Study participants took either two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or water with one ounce of cheese at bedtime for two days. The researchers found taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar at bedtime had a favorable impact on blood glucose levels the next morning. Prior to the study, the average fasting blood glucose level was 137 mg/dL. It decreased by 2% with the cheese and by 4% with the vinegar, a statistically significant difference. In people with a fasting glucose level above 130 mg/dL prior to the study, the vinegar reduced glucose levels by as much as 6%. The study was very small and the duration was short, so more research is needed.

Other studies have found that vinegar can lower the post-meal rise in glucose. The acetic acid in vinegar is thought to slow starch digestion and reduce the glycemic index of starchy foods. For example, a small study compared the effect of vinegar with white bread on blood glucose and insulin levels. Researchers found that those who took vinegar with white bread had lower post-meal blood glucose and insulin levels and it also appeared to increase satiety ratings.

Random tidbit: if you get fruitflies in the house (happens at lease once a summer here- and I try to keep it very clean, it usually happens when we are away on vacation!) place a cup of vinegar out for a few days and the flies get caught in it. Works pretty darn good, but it takes a couple days, don't touch the cup!

My father in law has terrible reflux and has been on every medicine under the sun and his doctor finally said swollow one teaspoon at the onset of an attack and so far he says it is working to relieve the indigestion. Don't know what it does to the esophagus but I have heard others in the medical department where I work state that they recommend apple cider vinegar to patients with reflux and diabetes. Keep us posted if it works, I have a good friend that does not take care of herself and she is type II diabetic.

Let me know how it goes for you. I have diabetes as well.

Wow! I use it in my homemade bbq sauce, put it on all greens...and yes, like you patty, love it on cucumbers with sald/pepper.

I've always loved vinegar. I can remember when I was a child, my mom would always have fresh veg.in the summer time. One of my favorites was cucumbers with vinegar/salt & pepper. I couldn't wait until everyone was through eating, so I could clear the table (that was my chore). I would turn the bowl up and drink the vinegar. My dad caught me a few times and told me that it would dry my blood up. I still have blood, so I guess that was a old saying. My sister drinks vinegar everyday for her blood pressure and it does work.

one teaspoon of vinegar will lower your lood preasure and keep it leval.

I have a book some place that is just about apple cider vinegar. I know I used it years ago for weight loss, and also for soar throats too...Now, Im gonna have to go find the book and see what else it was used for... Good blog by the way!!
