He was a great man, who did alot for NC and the conservative party.

Actually, the key provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as originally written were significantly different than what was actually passed. The view that conservatives held was that there should be no PUBLIC discrimination; liberals wanted no discrimination at all, in essence mandating personal belief systems. When all was said and done, and given the politics of the time, the bill passed. Everyone was able to save face, garner votes, and go home happy. Until the later Supreme Courts got hold of it and, along with leftist judges, twited the thing beyond all recognition by making up Constitutional law as they went along.

Go read the original bill. It is far different in tone and intent than what has fallen out of it today.

"What about John Kennedy? He personally opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but publically made it an issue to deflect from the involvement in the Vietnan War. And it took the pressure of LBJ to even get Kennedy to propose the legislation in the first place. Had it been up to Kennedy alone, and the overwhelming vote for the bill by the Republicans in Congress, it never would have seen the light of day."

So what you are, in effect, saying is that Kennedy reluctantly did the right thing? LOL

"So was Sam Ervin also evil?"

Hard to say. With regard to segregation, he didn't really get involved in the demagoguery and ugliness that characterized the positions of many of his contemporaries, but he supported it nonetheless.

So, if we're to grant some degrees of evil, he was probably less evil than Helms, but evil in some ways nonetheless.

"and the definition of "evil" to a liberal is any idea they disagree with." - OS

A divisive (and false) assumption, at least where I am concerned. Jesse's admirable qualities would include his consistency and his honesty surrounding his opinions and positions on the issues of the day. To his credit, he did change his mind over time (at least publicly) on some issues where his previously had demonstrated bigotry and intolerance.

As a moderate, I seldom agreed with him, but that doesn't prevent me from recognizing that he would always stand up for what *he* believed in.

"I was speaking specifically to his vociferous support of segregation"

So was Sam Ervin also evil?

"and the definition of "evil" to a liberal is any idea they disagree with."

I was speaking specifically to his vociferous support of segregation and his frequent on-air (back before it became unpopular, and therefore a political liability) diatribes extolling white supremacy.

If you can honestly defend those, then there's no hope for you.

EXACTLY, Steve and oldschool!

"I applaud him for standing up for his beliefs, but the evil inherent in many of those beliefs is something I can't defend or admire."

Is that kinda like "I support our troops, but I do not support the war?" Or "I voted yes before I voted no."
