miniature dachshund gnaws off diabetic owner's toe

Published Jul. 3, 2008

 http://www.wral.com/news/strange/story/3151822/

"ALTON, Ill. — An Illinois woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep. Linda Floyd told the Alton Telegraph for a story Wednesday that her beloved Roscoe was euthanized because of safety concerns.

The 56-year-old says she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage from diabetes. She discovered the toe missing after waking from a nap Monday. She called her daughter, who phoned 911.

A veterinarian says the toe had been bandaged because of a healing hangnail. That might have somehow attracted the dog."

Gee whiz...This would be a really rotten way to wake up.

or it could have been because the dog was tired of her kicking him with that foot lol

mentor, you and old reb could very well be right, my wife had a lot of foot pain due to diabetes and MS, our dog would get in bed and let her prop her feet on him as long as she needed to, he wouldn't do that for anyone else, and a couple of times when she fell he came and let her pull up on him and steady herself.

Mentor...that same thought occurred to me. I was wondering the exact same thing after I pondered on it, before I 'd even seen your post. I saw a news article the other dy where a little minautre greyhound would alerthis owner when it sensed the owner was about to experience an epiliptic episode and this would give the owner a chance to lay down so it would be in danger of a fall or getting hurt. And then the lil dog would lay right there while the episode went on, watching out for him. I thought that was pretty neat.

this kinda grossed me out. i have read some of the comments and have to admit they are funny!! lol wonder what made the dog do it to begin with? wow.

As strange as it may sound, the dog might have been trying to do her a favor. People in this stage of diabetes are prone to gangrene in the toes and feet following injury due to poor blood circulation. The dog may have thought it didn't smell right and may have acted on instinct. I know it may sound crazy, but it's actually not. There are other documented cases where dogs have tried to get at (what turned out to be) malignant tumors in their owner's leg. Evidence suggests that they can 'smell' cancer. They treat their owners like one of their own, and try to "help". Plausible?

At least it was a woman and her foot and not some poor man...

OY.

lol @ Beth

When ever I had some one riding to close to my bumper, I would slam on brakes a time or two. Finally they would read the plate and stay way back. They were usually afraid to pass we after that.

OH GOD! I GET IT NOW!

Deranged / somoeone stole my stove!

Beth

Squirrel, I guess I'm slow, but I don't get that! LOL!

;-)

What stove?
