spanking

Published Jun. 19, 2008

There is a current story on this site about a woman charged with abuse
for spanking her child.  Folks in this country, including many here on
GOLO as evidenced from the comments there, are out of their minds.

Since when is a 2-year-old a little angel? Since when is caring about
your child enough to take the actions now that will enable them to
live a peaceful, lawful, happy life later a bad thing? Would you
rather spare a spanking now or visit your adult child in prison later?

While there may be kids who do OK with timeouts, there are others who
do not, i.e., who will need to register with their rear-ends the
physical form of "no means no." No amount of verbage will
suffice. They MUST know the threat is real or else the words are
empty.

Why is this so difficult to accept?

Now, I think that leaving bruises is PROBABLY not necessary. However,
according to an officer at the Florida Child Protective Services,
corporal punishment in Florida is lawful as long as marks are not
left that last longer than a day.

Get a grip, America.

freespeech - Oh, I forgot about the school spankings. "The Paddle".

I got it twice.

(Slow learner.)

As a parent of 3 great, well-adjusted, sharp children, my experience is that (at times) spanking is the only thing that was effective. Our daughter only had to to popped on the behind about once, our two sons needed more emphasis in that area of their body. I was spanked as a child. The schools I attended all had spanking................it was a huge deterent. Just hearing that echo down the hall was enough to get one to straighten up a little more in his desk. Today, a student can do about anything to a teacher, less killing them, and be sitting right back in the classroom the next day or in a couple of days. In my opinion this is mainly due to the mere fact that these children have not been taught to respect authority, and when someone says no, it means no. In the end, teachers are left to put up with behavior that is just plain sorry, and the good kids are being cheated out of an education.

"the picture is by far the funniest thing I have seen today..

I'd just like to see the ones ryebread rejected when he googled "spanking". ;)

NCMOM: you ARE stubborn & hard-headed, aren't you??!!!!!!!!! One spanking was enough for me.

And, NCMOM, that well-placed spanking to TRY & teach them the meaning of the word "no" SURE BEATS what would happen if they ran into that road afterall. Satan is alive & well; a car would be sure to be coming just as that child ran into the road.

Yessirree, spanking sure beats the heck out of shaking our heads later on when we see that child do very wrong things, and, wonder why.

oldschool,,,I used to hate to have to wait. Because I never got the spanking, but the waiting about killed me! I only ever got one spanking in my life but it stuck with me. I was 5 yrs old and my mom had told me and told me and told me she better not catch me on top of the house. Well, dang it, my male cousins were up there and no matter that there were 5 years older than I was, I could do what they could do. I would not be left out! So, up I went. Do you know how hard it is for a 5 yr old, not yet in school, to climb a tree and get onto a house behind 10 yr olds? It's not easy but redheads are stubborn! I got to be pretty successful at it that summer. Anyway, my mom caught me. Beat my behind all the way to the house and broke the flyswatter in half. THEN she cut the tree down that I used to climb up! Rotten woman....lol

That's ok, when my cousins figured out another way,,,I was right behind 'em

the picture is by far the funniest thing I have seen today.. The kid on her lap is so tall- his frikin legs go over the side of the couch- you sure she is not "punishing" her hubby and later plans on rubbing hot candle wax all over him???

just to clarify, I'm talking about my own personal children. State law does not allow for corporal punishment in daycares. We have to use redirection. Now ask me how well that works with most 2 and 3 yr olds...lol

I believe in spankings, spankings not abuse or beatings and I agree there comes an age when they no longer work because the idea is to get the child's attention and to make them see that the behavior has such unpleasant consequences that they wish not do repeat the behavior. My son once told me a spanking was much better than one of my lectures. The spanking was over quickly, the lecture could last all day! LOL

I once had a discussion in a child development class regarding spanking. A lady said she didn't spank her child because she didn't want her child to fear her. Well, I would much rather my child fear me than be a pancake in the middle of the road. I'm sorry, you just can't reason with a 2 yr old. "now dear, you can't run in the road because the mean car will hit you"

You tell them, teach them, and if they don't listen, a well placed hand on the backside teaches them that running into the road HURTS

My rule of thumb is the only time a kid gets an imediate spanking is if he or she does something dangerous. (WIth my kids that has worked - I can understand it might not work for others.)

The non-immediate spanking is only for those occasions when nothing else has worked. (Remember how those words made you feel? "Go up stairs and wait for me - you're getting a spanking.")

Since I hate spanking my kids, it is fortunate for me that my son actually prefers spankings to other punishment - so he doesn't get many. (If we take away electricity as a punishment he will usually ask if he can get a spanking instead.)
