GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Goldsboro police are searching for a former charter school principal charged with raping a 12-year-old student.

Richard Omar Knight, 35, of Smithfield, was charged with statutory rape, a sex act with a student and indecent liberties with a student.

Police responded to a report of sexual assault Thursday, and a warrant was secured Friday.

Knight was principal of Dillard Academy, where officials say the alleged sexual contact occurred. According to his LinkedIn page, Knight had been at the school for about 2 and a half years.

Police say Knight has been suspended as principal, and school leaders are cooperating with their investigation. They asked for help from the public to track Knight down.

On Saturday morning, the school announced a meeting of the board of directors scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.

On LinkedIn, Knight describes himself as "a very enthusiastic teacher" with experience in elementary and middle school. He also lists Neuse Charter in Smithfield on his resume, saying he worked there from August 2011 to June 2015.

Police ask anyone with information to call or text Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or submit a tip at p3tips.com.
