WILSON, N.C. — Family and friends gathered Saturday night in Wilson to honor the memory of a 16-year-old boy.

Hundreds of people attended the candlelight vigil to remember Rodshawn Barnes, was shot in his home Monday and later died at a hospital.

Barnes’ mother, Letaisha Huggins, said her son was in his room playing video games with friends before police were called to the home for a medical emergency. When officers arrived at the home, they were told Barnes had been taken to the hospital friends.

By time authorities arrived at the hospital, Barnes had been pronounced dead.

Those who attended Saturday night’s vigil said the Starship Lane neighborhood is tight-knit and all the teenagers in the area grew up together.

“He didn’t deserve that. He was really sweet, always smiling. We would be fussing at him and he would still be smiling. He would think it’s funny. He never was mad or nothing,” friend Erica Jenkins said.

Huggins told WRAL News that she never heard shots fired before her son was taken to the hospital.

Charges have not been filed in connection with the case and police have classified the incident as a death investigation.
