RALEIGH, N.C. — Fairgoers can enjoy free admission to the N.C. State Fair on Thursday when they donate six cans of food at the fair gates.
The N.C. State Fair has offered the Hunger Relief Day event since 1993, and over 5.3 million pounds of food have been donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and its partners as a result.

This year's event was sponsored by Smithfield Foods, which presented the food bank with a donation of 500,000 servings of protein to help feed hungry people.

The six-can donation for free admission is per person and runs all day. General admission tickets are normally $13.

On Thursday, before Smithfield Foods presented the gift, state Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler said the donations of canned food mean so much to the local food banks that work to feed people during winter months.

If you are looking for a good deal on canned food, Harris Teeter has canned corn and green beans on sale for $0.39 per can through Oct. 26. Most ALDI, Lidl and Wegmans locations have canned vegetables for $0.50 or less per can every day, as well.
