An active duty soldier with the 82nd Airborne division at Fort Liberty was killed Saturday morning after being ejected from an overturned vehicle, according to officials.

The soldier was identified as Nathan Whorton.

Deputies say around 4:16 a.m., Whorton was speeding roughly 100mph on Overhills Road, between Bill Shaw Road and Anderson Creek School Road.

He crossed the center line and went off the road, crashing into a tree. The impact sent him into other trees, and the car overturned, the seat belt broke and Whorton was ejected.

A trooper said speed was a factor in the crash, and there is some evidence alcohol may have been a factor as well. Deputies on the scene told the trooper that Harnett County 911 received a phone call showing concern for his safety because he had been drinking.
