Former UNC Pembroke student dies after campus police respond to shots fired call

Around 4:43 p.m., UNC Pembroke Campus Police responded to a shots fired call at Courtyard Apartments. When they arrived, they found shell casings, but not a shooter or victim. Shortly after, Robeson County deputies responded to another incident involving an individual needing medical attention who later died from their injuries.

PEMBROKE, N.C. — A former UNC Pembroke student is dead following a shooting Wednesday near the school’s campus

Around 4:43 p.m., UNC Pembroke Campus Police responded to a shots fired call at Courtyard Apartments. When they arrived, they found shell casings but no shooter or victim.

Shortly after, Robeson County deputies responded to another incident involving an individual needing medical attention. That person later died. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was a former UNCP student.

The school later gave the all-clear and said the campus was "safe and secure."

Campus police, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the connection between the two incidents.

The school said classes beginning before 11 a.m. are canceled for Thursday.
