CARY, N.C. — Former state Rep. Chris Heagarty was named Tuesday to fill the seat on the Wake County Board of Education left vacant after board member Kathy Hartenstine's death in September.
Heagarty was the only person to apply for the position. A Democrat, he was appointed to an open seat representing southwestern Wake County in the state House in 2009, but he lost his election bid the following year to former Rep. Tom Murry, R-Wake.

He now serves as executive director of the City of Oaks Foundation, a nonprofit conservation and youth development organization closely aligned with Raleigh’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.

Hartenstine, 68, ran unopposed last month and won re-election to her District 7 seat, despite the fact that she died unexpectedly six weeks earlier.

A former teacher and principal, she had served two years on the school board, finishing the term of former board member Zora Felton, who died in November 2016.
