RALEIGH, N.C. — Several vehicles became trapped in floodwaters as rain moved through Raleigh on Saturday night, according to police.

Several streets in downtown Raleigh flooded and at least one person needed to be rescued from the top of their vehicle after driving into floodwater on Capital Boulevard.

“When you have heavy rain fall in an urban area where there’s mostly concrete, the rain runs off really quickly and the end result is flash flooding. We had some minor flooding in downtown Raleigh,” WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

Maze said no rain is expected overnight and skies will be dry on Sunday, but the chance for more rain will increase as the day continues.

There is about a 50 percent chance for storms to pop up Sunday night, and those are expected to stick around longer than Saturday’s storms.

“These are likely to last overnight Sunday into Monday morning,” Maze said.

Maze said a portion of the state, largely north of Raleigh, will be under a level 1 risk for severe weather as a result of Sunday's storms, which could produce damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.
