Death investigation underway after man's body found at Fayetteville home

Police were searching for clues after the body of a man was found Sunday inside a Fayetteville home, authorities said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police were searching for clues after the body of a man was found Sunday inside a Fayetteville home, authorities said.

Willis Earl Whitfield, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called to a home in the 200 block of Plantation Road about 2:15 p.m.

Fayetteville investigators said in a written statement that the man's death "appears to be suspicious in nature," and the department's homicide unit is looking into the incident.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine how the man died.

Police did not disclose if the man lived alone. Investigators have also not said who told investigators about the man's death.
