FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville man has been charged with falsely leasing a property to multiple renters, according to police.

Edwin Jamaal Wilson, 43, was charged Wednesday with five felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, Wilson is accused of using Facebook to find people to lease his own home on Shads Ford Boulevard.

"Wilson would meet with the hopeful renters, walk them through the residence he was actually living in, and have them sign a fraudulent lease, which he received a deposit for," police said.

Wilson is then accused of using various excuses to delay the prospective tenant’s move-in date.

“It’s important to always request proof of and verify ownership of a property prior to entering a rental agreement,” said Sergeant Rugg, supervisor over the Cross Creek District’s Property/Fraud Unit. "These predators make it seem very easy to rent a property, which should be a red flag if you are a prospective renter.”

Anyone with information or who believes they may be a victim of Wilson’s actions is asked to contact Detective W. VaanAnen at 910-303-8303.
