FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville firefighters had to rescue a family from the second-story windows of their home after it went up in flames late Wednesday night.

Just before 11:30 p.m., the Fayetteville Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Christina Street.

When fire crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a two-story home.

A grandmother and two children had to be taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation during a house fire on Wednesday night.

Four people were in the home at the time of the fire and three were taken to UNC Hospitals. No one was burned.

Two adults and two children were rescued from the second-story windows. The two children and a grandmother were taken to the hospital. Grandmother Denise Galarza and 10-year-old Lareina Galarza and 4-month-old Thalia Galarza all had smoke inhalation. The children's mother, Kiarra Galarza, was able to get out without injury.

Lareina Galarza holds her sister, Thalia Galarza. They both suffered from smoke inhalation.

The fire is believed to have started in the garage.

Kiarra Galarza said she's still in shock.

"The smoke was so hot, it felt like fire," she said.

She was taking a break from her work-from-home job at her house on Christina Street, when she noticed smoke coming from the converted garage.

"The first thing I did was call 911," Kiarra said. "I feel like I should have ran upstairs, then call 911 or something."

Fayetteville fire and police crews are investigating.
