RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh family is sharing their story of survival after a tree crashed into their car while traveling on the highway to Virginia.

The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 70 as Starr Smith, her 15-year-old sister, 8-year-old son Zakai, and her mother were traveling to Virginia last Saturday.

Smith noticed the falling tree and told her mother, who attempted to avoid it but couldn't in time.

Despite the car being crushed, everyone inside survived.

Smith says by the grace of God, everyone in the car lived through the moments right after she didn't think that was the case.

"I definitely believe God was protecting us," Starr Smith, the survivor, said. "That's the only thing that makes sense. When it literally happened, I thought when I opened my eyes, I would be in heaven because I literally thought I died."

Zakai, Star Smith's son says he climbed his way out from the backseat along with Smith's sister.

Smith's mom suffered injuries, including a fractured spine, but is expected to be okay.

Smith wants someone to look into the tree that fell because she believes it might have been dead and should have been removed, so this could have been avoided.

A GoFundMe has been created to help the family with medical bills and therapy after the tree crash accident.
