VANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A grieving family is looking for answers after their loved one was identified as one of the three people found dead in a Vance County home over the weekend.

Deputies found 49-year-old Danielle Williams, 25-year-old Tre’von Hargrove and 47-year-old Juan Black Saturday evening while doing a welfare check.

Sylvia Black is Juan Black’s mother. She said that Hargrove was Williams’ son.

Black said she tried calling both Juan and Williams that day. When no one answered the phone, she and Williams’ daughter met at the home on Abbott Road.

“I walked up the steps, and I could see [Juan]. He was laying on the pillow. I was just banging. [Danielle’s daughter] had called 911 by that time. The sheriff finally came,” Black said. She said they could see Juan through a window, but he was not responding. “I guess [the sheriff] had more sense than we did. He grabbed the doorknob and looked at her and said, ‘it’s not locked.’ He pushed, and the door wouldn’t open very far. He said, ‘there’s a body laying in front of the door.’”

Black said she could tell that something was very wrong.

“In that moment, I just lost it. I knew something bad had happened,” she said.

Deputies say the victims were found shot to death.

“It’s like I lost two children and a grandchild,” Black said.

She said she used to work with Williams, and they became very close. In fact, Black invited Williams to her family reunion in August. That’s where she met Juan.

“They were a sweet, sweet couple. They loved each other; you could tell that they thought a lot of each other,” Black said.

Over time, Juan also got to know Hargrove very well.

“Danielle’s son was autistic…He wasn’t very social…My son just kind of drew him out of that little shell,” Black said.

Juan’s aunt LaSonya Glover said the incident came as a shock, especially since the three victims were so well-liked.

“He was more than a nephew; he was more like a brother to me,” Glover said. “I don’t think you can meet anybody who has bad words to say about him.”

WRAL asked why, and if, Juan would be the target.

“I have no earthly idea why anyone would want to harm him. He didn’t make enemies. That’s what makes it so hard for us, trying to figure out who would have done something like this to him,” Glover said. “Everybody loved all of them. They were good-hearted people.”

WRAL also learned Williams was a city of Durham employee. She worked in both Human Resources and Waste Management for the city since late 2021.

The sheriff’s office believes this was an isolated incident. It’s not clear if deputies are looking for a suspect. The office has asked for the State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the investigation.

Williams’ family declined an interview with WRAL, requesting privacy.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at 252-738-2200 or the Henderson-Vance Crimestoppers at 252-492-1925 or through the P3 App.
