DURHAM, N.C. — The Chief Financial Officer for Durham Public Schools has been suspended after an error in payments caused some staff to be overpaid for months.

Now, Durham schools must correct the overpayment, and some employees paychecks will be impacted.

DPS announced in a statement Friday that some employees received overpayments in their July 2023 through December 2023 paychecks due to an error in implementing salary changes for classified staff.

The error stemmed from a mistake in the October 2023 implementation of the board-approved salary schedule.

While DPS is still finalizing the process for recovering the overpayments, Superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga says how important the immediate action was to prevent further discrepancies.

According to the statement, starting with the next paycheck, all affected employees will be placed on the correct step on the official 2023-2024 salary schedule.

Mubenga told employees that despite the error, the corrected salary schedule still reflects an increase compared to the previous year. He says he deeply regretted the inconvenience caused and acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the mistake.

DPS will soon provide further details on the overpayment recovery process and timeline.

Employees with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact their supervisors or the Human Resources department.
