DURHAM, N.C. — On Friday, a Durham-based journalist was arrested for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol.
In 2021, Steve Baker spoke openly with WRAL Investigates about going to the Capitol that day, but he claims he was only there to document what happened.

In that interview, Baker descries his decision to enter the Capitol.

"Suddenly, there was this free flow of humanity going up those steps. I saw that was taking place and doing what I think many journalists would do. I followed the story where I thought the story was headed," Baker said.

Baker is a conservative political commentator who, at the time, wrote under the moniker "The Pragmatic Constitutionalist."

Today, he writes for Blaze Media and has over 40,000 followers on social media platforms.

The FBI confirmed Baker was taken into custody in Dallas, Texas, where he will have his initial court appearance in the Northern District.

Previously, Baker conceded that he had no press credentials but maintained he was there to report independently.

In a past interview, legal experts pointed out that Baker’s lack of press credentials would still warrant trespassing charges.

Yet, Baker said he had not participated in any criminal activity once inside.

"I didn’t do any violence or catcalling of the law enforcement officers," Baker said.

In his previous interview, Baker also condemned the violence on Jan. 6.
