DURHAM, N.C. — A group of Durham County leaders who are working to reduce crime among young people will meet on Thursday to discuss new numbers showing a major uptick in juvenile crime in the city.

Juvenile crime offenses in Durham went up more than 49% from 2022 to 2023, according to the crime report released from the Durham Police Department.

  • The report shows larceny was the most common juvenile crime.
  • There were a total of 76 juvenile larceny offenses last year -
  • That's up from 55 the year before.

Durham County's Juvenile Crime Prevention Council will talk about ways to change that. They’re discussing funding options for programs to help delinquent or at-risk youth. They already have $71,000 from the state.

Now, the group must discuss how to best allocate those funds.

Programs they select to fund will go into effect July 1.
