Durham apartment building's parent company accused of mismanagement of security deposits, taxpayer funds
The deplorable conditions inside of JFK Towers in Durham aren't what's drawn rebuke from the federal government. Instead, it is investigating the building's parent company for mismanagement of tenant security deposits and taxpayer dollars.
Posted — UpdatedThe Department of Housing and Urban Development is looking into safety and code violations at Millennia Housing Management properties across the country, including the JFK Towers at 4900 North Roxboro St. in Durham. The company owns and operates more than 280 complexes across the U.S.
JFK Towers is meant for low-income and disabled seniors.
In the statement, a spokesperson wrote, “HUD is holding them accountable by demanding repayment of misappropriated funds, seeking to impose civil money penalties on those responsible, and issuing a suspension and proposing debarment. That means the company and its President are immediately prohibited from entering into new business with any federal government agency.”
On Friday, WRAL News reached out to Millennia Housing Management. The company provided a statement that reads in part, “Millennia is aware of HUD’s concerns and has taken actions to address them while supporting a business model through increasingly challenging economic conditions.”
WRAL News reviewed inspection reports from October 2023 that point to similar financial mismanagement at JFK Towers itself.
The report noted errors tied to federal Housing Assistance Payments going back months, along with pages of other issues.
HUD says they're now considering further sanctions, but says Millennia Housing's tenants, including at JFK Towers, won't be impacted.
Residents of JFK Towers have also filed a lawsuit due to the living conditions.
