Wrong-way driver causes head-on crash that closed I-40

A driver was seriously injured in a crash with a FedEx truck early Wednesday morning on Interstate 40, police said.

DURHAM, N.C. — A driver was seriously injured in a crash with a FedEx truck early Wednesday morning on Interstate 40, police said.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. and closed most of the westbound lanes of the highway near the Interstate 540 interchange for a few hours overnight.

According to Durham police, Qianyu Hang, 25, of Raleigh, was driving a white Toyota RAV4 east in the westbound lanes when the vehicle collided with a FedEx 2018 Volvo 18-wheeler driven by Tyrone Hines, 68, of Pinetops.

A driver was seriously injured in a crash with a FedEx truck early Wednesday morning on Interstate 40, police said.

Hines told police he saw the vehicle coming toward him and swerved to the right, limiting the damage.

Hang was taken to an area hospital. Hines was not injured.

Police said there had been calls to 911 about a wrong-way driver before the collision.

No charges have been filed in the incident, but it remains under investigation.
