Driver charged in deadly pedestrian crash on Hammond Road in Raleigh

A pedestrian was killed Thursday in a crash on Hammond Road approaching the Interstate 40 overpass.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A pedestrian was killed Thursday in a crash on Hammond Road approaching the Interstate 40 overpass.

According to police, a pedestrian was sitting in the far-left eastbound lane on Hammond Road.

Around 2:45 a.m., a 2022 Honda Pilot traveling in the same lane struck the pedestrian, who died.

The driver was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed.

Hammond Road was closed for over an hour headed into downtown Raleigh. The lanes reopened by 6:45 a.m..

A crash reconstruction team was on the scene around 5:38 a.m., and Raleigh police could be seen blocking the road.

WRAL News is working to learn the identity of the person who was killed.
