KENLY, N.C. — Traffic was slowed but not stopped on Interstate 95 in northern Johnston County Tuesday afternoon as crews repaired downed power lines.

A woman was driving on Richardson Drive in Kenly at about 3 a.m. and, based on GPS directions, thought she was getting on an entrance ramp to southbound I-95, authorities said. Instead, the road runs into Johnston Parkway, which runs parallel to the highway, and her SUV hit some guy wires and snapped off the top of a utility pole north of Bagley Road (Exit 105), authorities said.

The woman suffered only minor injuries, but the crash knocked power lines onto I-95, forcing authorities to close the highway in both directions between Bagley Road and U.S. Highway 301 (Exit 107) for about three hours.

Duke Energy and the State Highway Patrol worked together to complete the repairs on the power lines, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Troopers were stationed in each lane of I-95 to conduct a "running roadblock," essentially slowing traffic to about 20 mph, while Duke crews hoisted the lines back over the highway, DOT spokesman Andrew Barksdale said.

The effort took about five minutes to complete.
