Dog shot near public golf course, man charged with animal cruelty in Vance County

A man is charged with animal cruelty after a dog was shot near a public golf course.

HENDERSON, N.C. — A man is charged with animal cruelty after a dog was shot near a public golf course.

The Vance County Sheriff's Office investigated reports of a dog shot at the Kerr Lake County Club, located at 600 Hedrick Drive in Henderson.

According to the sheriff's office, the incident occurred on March 3 but was not reported until March 15.

James Bradley Pierce was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Pierce's court date is set for May 6.

No person or building was shot at, officials said, but the shots were fired in the direction of the golf course.

There was no word on the condition of the dog.
