DURHAM, N.C. — A documentary of three University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students killed in 2015 screened Monday night in Durham.
36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime examines the 2015 murders of Deah Barakat, his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, and her sister Razan. The documentary played at the Carolina Theater in Durham at 7 p.m. on Monday night.
The documentary premiered in November during DOC NYC, widely considered one of the largest documentary festivals in the world. The festival partnered with Subject Matter to present a $20,000 grant to support the film’s audience outreach and impact efforts.
Subject Matter also presented a $20,000 grant to Our Three Winners, a nonprofit organization that is addressing the topics featured in the film.

The documentary features interviews with their families, law enforcement officers and never-before-seen footage of the suspect’s confession.

After the film, a panel shared their thoughts on the film on what people should learn from the lives of Deah, Yusor and Razan.

Those in the film believed hate motivated the suspect, Craig Hicks, to kill the three students, and believe Hicks should've been charged with a hate crime.

Hicks pleaded guilty to their murders in 2019 and was sentenced to three consecutive life-terms.

The documentary will screen again at the Cary Theater on Tuesday and North Carolina State University’s campus on Monday, Feb. 19.
