Here we are, heading into another Memorial Day weekend, the kind of long, steamy holiday weekend where I wouldn't mind heading out for an ice cream cone.

And that's why I'm featuring Mama Bird's Cookies + Cream in this week's destination post. Mama Bird's is a new ice cream shop, open since late last fall, in Holly Springs.
As owner Lesley Richmond told me earlier this month, the shop features custard-style ice cream with a rotating selection of flavors - like strawberry-lime sorbet; peanut butter and chocolate buckeye; blueberry crumble; and chocolate milk. Just about everything is scratch made - from the ice cream to the brittle in the butter pecan ice cream and the pie in the apple pie ice cream. Even the waffle cones are made from scratch.

But there's more than ice cream. Richmond features baked goods too. When we visited a couple of weeks ago, there were cookies, including chocolate chip, sugar and Oreo overload, along with a peach and raspberry cobbler and brownies.

The shop also serves up ice cream favorites - including sundaes, shakes, homemade ice cream pops and chocolate covered bananas. And, you can make your own cookie or brownie ice cream sandwiches.

In other words ... so. many. choices.

When my girls and I went, they opted for two scoops - cotton candy and cookies and cream for one, strawberry cheesecake and strawberry-lime sorbet for the other, in a waffle cone (an unusual splurge). I got a peach and raspberry cobbler topped with a scoop of vanilla malt ice cream.

It was so good. The ice cream was flavorful and creamy. The strawberry-lime sorbet was surprisingly delicious. That'll be my order next time we go. The cobbler also was tasty - with a nice mix of fruit and crust. And that vanilla malt ice cream? Wow.

The shop is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday. It's closed on Mondays. You'll find it across from the Pizza Hut and next to the Exxon station at 304 N. Main St., Holly Springs.

It's worth the drive!
