EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — A deputy with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office was killed following a two-car crash Sunday night.

Authorities said a patrol car traveling south on N.C. Highway 111 and a vehicle traveling north on N.C. Highway 111 collided at about 6:15 p.m.

According to the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, a deputy in the patrol car died as a result of the crash. The name of the deputy was not released.

Authorities did not say what caused the crash or if wet roadways as a result of Sunday’s rainy weather were to blame.

Video from the scene showed at least one vehicle that had veered off the right side of the road.

"I am truly saddened by the loss of one of our deputies as a result of this collision. Our hearts go out to both families involved. Please keep us all in prayer," Edgecombe County Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
