The town of Chapel Hill has a new outdoor learning and play area for kids and families at Pritchard Park.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, the town will celebrate the opening of its initiative, Explore More at Pritchard Park, which offers new opportunities for outdoor play and learning. Kids and families are invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony and then can "choose their own adventure," a press release says.

They'll get to dig in the dirt, climb around giant stumps, go on an outdoor scavenger hunt, make a nature craft, look for birds or take a walk in the woods. The new outdoor natural play area also includes a collection of nature backpacks for kids and families, a series of environmental programs and a selection of tools and other equipment.

The public also can take advantage of resources for citizen science, which lets the general public collect data and share information about the natural world with the scientific community.

A variety of town departments and groups worked to make the project possible, including Chapel Hill's library, parks and recreation, fire and public works departments - along the UNC Institute for the Environment and the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

Pritchard Park is at 100 Library Dr. in Chapel Hill.
