The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education voted for Dr. Nyah Hamlett to be the district's next superintendent on Monday. Hamlett will begin on Jan. 1.

"The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously and enthusiastically supports the selection of Dr. Nyah Hamlett as our next superintendent," said board chair Mary Ann Wolf. "We are certain that Dr. Hamlett's demonstrated commitment to equity, communication and transparency makes her selection a strong choice for our schools and our community."

Before being named superintendent for CHCCS, Hamlett worked at Henrico County Public Schools in Virginia.

"I am so honored to have been selected to serve the beautifully diverse Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools community as superintendent, and I am appreciative for the board's confidence in me," said Hamlett. "I look forward to working collaboratively with the board and the community to remove barriers and create opportunities for each student, staff and family to grow and thrive."

The school district's previous superintendent Pam Baldwin resigned on June 30.
