Two local towns are reopening additional park facilities that closed during COVID.

Starting this week, most of Cary's previously-closed parks, recreation and cultural resources facilities will reopen to the public with limited summer hours. More will open in July.

Among the highlights for families beyond summer camps:

  • The boathouse at Bond Park will restart weekday boat rentals.
  • The Cary Theater will resume in-person movie screenings
  • And Cary Arts Center will offer limited arts and recreation classes.

“This is a huge step in bringing the places and people that make Cary so special together,” said Doug McRainey, director of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources, said in a press release. “We’re so excited to be able to safely host programs, events and classes that allow us all to learn and have fun together in person, and to add those to the virtual and outdoor programs we’ve offered throughout the past year just makes it more special.”

Some of the locations are primarily open to campers for now. Others have limited hours and are open for specific uses, such as pickleball. The town's website has more information about what's open now and when other facilities will open going forward. The town also will offer virtual, outdoor and indoor programs this summer. Pre-registration for July programs starts June 22.
Wake Forest also recently expanded access to its community centers — Joyner Park Community Center, Flaherty Park Community Center and the Alston-Massenburg Center. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon, Saturdays.  They are closed Sundays. Before entering any of these facilities, visitors must register in advance online. No walk-ins allowed, according to the town.
