Car crashes into pond near Southpoint, 65-year-old man killed

According to the Durham Fire Department, first responders performed a water rescue near the mall off Fayetteville Road near I-40.

DURHAM, N.C. — A driver killed Tuesday night when a car plunged into a pond near The Streets at Southpoint has been identified as Morris James Johnson Jr., 65, of Durham.

According to the Durham Fire Department, around 5:50 p.m. first responders performed a water rescue near the mall in 6900 block of Fayetteville Road, near Interstate 40.

The Durham Police Department said officers and firefighters immediately entered the water and removed the driver from the car.

The driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

A police officer and firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
