Research Triangle Park, N.C. — GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) is laying off some 350 people involved in research and development, and an unspecified number of those affected work at GSK’s operations in the Triangle.
Reuters reported the layoffs Wednesday morning in London.
GSK disclosed plans to reduce its work force last October. It operates one of its two U.S. headquarters in RTP, where some 5,000 people work.
The international pharmaceutical giant also operates a manufacturing facility in Zebulon that employs approximately 1,000 people.
GSK’s research and development business includes some 17,000 people, according to Reuters.
Researchers and staff are also being cut in the U.K., Italy and at two other locations in the U.S., Reuters reported.
